Flattr this

I ran across this blog post entitled Tomas van Houtryve Sneaks into North Korea over on DVAFOTO, a blog written by photojournalists M. Scott Brauer and Matt Lutton a few days ago and wanted to share it with everyone in case you didn't know about van Houtryve's escapades in North Korea.

This subject is especially timely since North Korean President Kim Jong Il is said to have recently suffered a stroke and is also afflicted with cancer. Scant information is available regarding his youngest son, slated to eventually assume the reigns as the country's new boss.

Further, a North Korean court convicted U.S. journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee of spying in June 2009 (Video) or (Story).

Although former US President William Clinton secured the release of the two Americans earlier this month and even enjoyed "chit chat" over dinner with Kim Jong Il, the nation is still shrouded in secrecy and baffles "external experts".

That’s why I'm simply amazed by what Tomas van Houtryve did. Talk about how to get access to shoot a photo story! According to DVAFOTO, van Houtryve gained access to photograph factories, hospitals and government offices by "Adopting the persona of a Belgian chocolate magnate, complete with disguise and funny accent."

I wonder if Belgian chocolate was on Kim Jong Il's dessert menu.

You can read more on the DVAFOTO blog and follow the links to van Houtryve's photos from there.
