Nigeria: The Curse Of Oil

John Densky begins, "As of early 2009, Nigeria had an estimated 36.2 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, mainly along the country’s Niger River Delta and offshore in the Bight of Benin, the Bight of Bonny, and the Gulf of Guinea. Despite the enormous oil wealth, 71% of the population lives on less than $1 USD per day."

He continues, "Royal Dutch Shell reported a profit of 27.6 billion dollars for fiscal 2007 and oil has brought in an estimated $600 billion USD for Nigeria since the 1960’s. Nevertheless, roughly 80% of Nigeria’s oil and natural gas revenues accrue to just 1% of the population according to the World Bank."

John Densky went to Nigeria to probe deeper into this current state of affairs for his photo reportage Nigeria: The Curse Of Oil, now appearing on Gaia Photos, a new international photography source comprised of 48 photojournalists from around the world whose mission is to promote quality and diversity in documentary photography.

John was raised on the west coast of Canada and has had a lifelong commitment to the still image. He performs freelance assignment work for such entities as The Canadian Press and Associated Press while finishing a BA in Political Science and hopes to go on to earn a masters degree in Journalism. He is also multilingual, speaking English, French and German.

John Densky lives and works in southwestern Ontario, Canada.
