India: Mercury Menace

"Beautiful lakes, silent hills coated with eucalyptus and pine trees, misty mornings ascertaining a perennially cool weather, Kodaikanal comes across as a perfect tourist destination in southern India. However, even this picture perfect landscape has not escaped the harsh consequences of man’s eternal greed. It is a story of suffering on account of exposure to toxic substances, of human kind in a battle for survival in the face of negligent corporate policies and ignorant government."

Reporting on corporate malfeasance, photojournalist Sudhanshu Malhotra visited Kodaikanal to get a closer look and his photo reportage India: Mercury Menace is now appearing on Gaia Photos, a new international photography source comprised of 48 photojournalists from around the world whose mission is to promote quality and diversity in documentary photography.

Sudhanshu Malhotra continues, "In 1983 a leading multinational corporation, Hindustan Lever, a subsidiary of Unilever and an Anglo- Dutch corporation, started their operations in Kodaikanal to meet the growing demand for mercury thermometers, a product which was banned in most parts of the world." Further, Malhotra notes, "HLL has made desperate attempts to avoid liability for charges of having dispersed mercury in sensitive forest watershed, contaminating over 1000 people who have been exposed to the mercury vapors."

Born in New Delhi, India in 1984, freelance photojournalist Sudhanshu Malhotra graduated with a degree in Commerce from the University of Delhi in 2005. After a short stint as a copywriter in 2006, Sudhanshu joined India Today group as a staff photographer. Since 2008, Sudhanshu has been concentrating on the consequences of contemporary industrial pollution cross India and later in the year he received the National Foundation for India photography grant.

Sudhanshu’s photography of the Yamuna River garnered second prize at the UNICEF clean India photo awards and in 2008, he was selected to participate in the Angkor Photography Workshop.

Sudhanshu Malhotra lives and works in New Delhi, India.
