Battambang Cambodia: The City Time Forgot

If you have ever been to the Los Angeles, California USA suburb of Culver City, you may view it as one of a vanishing breed of locales in America that could be described as a city that time forgot.

The clock seems to have stopped years ago in parts of some Cambodian cities as well, and one is Battambang, a town along the route between Phnom Penh, the capital city, and the Cambodian border town of Poipet, home to several modern gambling casinos.

Unique 1950's and 1960' era architecture dots Battambang and most tourists view the area as a brief stop along the way to better known destinations such as visitor choked Siem Reap, home of Angkor Wat, or Bangkok, Thailand.

Battambang is a "working town" and many Khmers conduct business there as it plays host to several NGOs (Non-governmental organizations).

The photo above depicts the Battambang train station, a facility maintained by Cambodia's Ministry of Public Works and Transportation. Weekly passenger service is available to Battambang from Phnom Penh, but I don't advise traveling the course alone as several tourists have fallen victim to robbery, knife attacks and other violence while riding the train along this route.
