Menopause, Cindy Crawford, Playboy. These names and words appear on magazine covers at a newsstand in the Georgetown district of Penang, Malaysia.

One of the first things I do when visiting a city for the first time is pick up an English version of the local newspaper and check out the magazine racks. Doing so will not only helps one learn about local issues and news coverage, it will give you an idea of how aware the city's residents are of the outside world as well.

These small clues will help you negotiate your way around a new destination and provide you with a bit more cultural sensitivity. You might even be better prepared to spark up a conversation with a resident or two.

In Cambodia, awareness of issues being discussed in other countries is still very low, reflecting the nation's Third World status. In Malaysia, censorship aside, "modern topics" and world events are more thoroughly addressed.
