"The Indonesian whale hunter village, Lamalera Rain mostly exists in the prayers of Christian people of Lamalera" begins Gyula Sopronyi's photo reportage Indonesia: Trouble For Native Whale Hunters.
Gyula's whale hunting images from the South Pacific are appearing on Gaia Photos, a global group of photojournalists who hope to increase awareness about the challenges we are facing together on this planet and to promote understanding across all borders, physical or otherwise.
Although he was employed as a photojournalists at Hungary’s most influential political daily newspaper, Népszabadság, Mr. Sopronyi decided to start freelancing since he feels that "travel abroad gave me the possibility for more thoughtful work." Presently he continues to seek out faces, eyes telling history and moments hiding the heritage of generations because he's captivated by changes of social roles in varied locales and the people behind the process.
Gyula has also kept busy by attending the Magnum Masterclass in London, England in 2008 and visiting Toronto, Canada to take part in a Magnum Workshop held there in 2004-2005 among others.
He won the Visegrad Artist Residency Program in 2008 as well as first prize in the National Geographic Award's Daily Life single category in 2007. As a member of the Association of Hungarian Journalists he's earned dozens of awards too numerous to mention.
