A Buddhist monk walks past a row of bright Buddhist statues at Wat Doe Suthep in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.
Overlooking Chiang Mai from a mountainside 13 km to the west, Wat Doe Suthep is northern Thailand's most famous temple. Wat Doi Suthep is also the newest temple from the Lanna Thai period and serves as the symbol of Chiang Mai. Established in 1383 and renowned for its large gold-plated chedi, it's visible from the city on a clear day, The site was selected by sending an elephant to roam at will up the mountainside.
Although easily reached in 30 minutes from the Chiang Mai Zoo by songthaew, many tourists choose to rent a motorcycle or a bicycle to make the uphill trip.
If you have a destination you want to promote in SE Asia, email me and maybe we can work something out.
